Miswak – The World’s Oldest Toothbrush
One of the first “noted” forms of dental hygiene
is the “Miswak”, which is still used by people in North Africa, Southeast and
Central Asia, and the Middle East. What exactly is this so-well-hidden secret
known as the miswak?
Miswak is a natural toothbrush that comes from a
tree called the “Salvadora persica”, or “Arak” or “Peelu”. For decades,
researchers have looked at the miswak’s natural antibiotic properties, which
are found in the tree’s branches and roots. Many studies have concluded that,
when it’s used right, it can have a positive effect on a person’s oral hygiene.
The tree’s leaves and berries were also found to have natural remedies in them.
With so many good things coming from this tree,
it’s not surprising that the World Health Organization, in 2008, endorsed
Miswak.
Ofcourse the miswak is also less expensive and environmentally friendly, its portability and self-cleansing outer layer guarantees a cleaner and extra common brush.
